Quality Prevails – 04-2026
Attentive readers know that Domingos regularly pokes fun at accessibility overlays—the snake oil of accessibility. Nice-sounding words, pretty design, absolutely useless. But time and again we see that quality ultimately prevails. When you’re sick, you don’t buy a magic herb from the internet—you go to your doctor, because the herb didn’t help.
Accessibility is no different: an overlay won’t protect you from negative audit results or complaints from people with disabilities. Even overlay providers have now realized that they have damaged their reputation through their sales tactics and false promises. It’s no coincidence that there are several legal cases in the United States against websites that used overlays and fell for these misleading claims—and in some cases against the providers themselves. They are now trying to develop new products.
Our advice: a professional will always give you honest guidance. They will point out problems and limitations. They won’t promise magical solutions. They won’t pressure you into signing a contract quickly. They might be a bit annoying—but being annoyed is better than buying snake oil.
Note on the newsletter: as the scope keeps growing, we’ve added a new category on AI and accessibility at the end. We hope this improves clarity. We aim to present many different perspectives while still keeping things easy to navigate.
